Title: 2020-21 NFL news and notes
Post by: InThe313 on August 24, 2020, 04:00:16 PM
Normally, I'd start this page at the preseason, but there won't be one this year.  (Stupid pandemic!)  Still, I wanted to get this open prior to the start of the regular season, so let's use this space to discuss the National Football League.  Remember, stay respectful to everybody.

Stuff like this is why I wish they wouldn't have even tried to have NFL season this year. They are doing fuck all about the pandemic and as per usual, more worried about their money than player safety. I think they'll end up cancelling an entire week of games at one point. It's not set up anything like the bubble that the NBA prepared.

Sadly, this wasn't the first coaching casualty of 2020 that I was hoping for.  According to Adam Schefter and Dan Graziano, the Texans fired head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien after an 0-4 start to the season.

I have over half of my projected fantasy points for the week staked on four players in this game, so I need them to come through tonight.  The 3-2 Cardinals are playing the 2-3 Cowboys on Monday Night Football.  The Cardinals’ Kyler Murray has five rushing touchdowns this season.  The Cowboys have lost three straight prime-time games.  Updates to come.

The Cardinals beat the Cowboys, 38-10.

In one game last year, he meshed well with Tom Brady and soon, they will be reunited.  According to Adam Schefter, wide receiver Antonio Brown and the Buccaneers reached an agreement on a one-year deal.  Brown will likely make his debut in Week 9 against the Saints on Nov. 8 in Tampa, Fla.

I think the team that wins the defensive battle wins the game.  The 5-1 Bears are playing the 4-2 Rams on Monday Night Football.  The Rams’ Aaron Donald leads the NFC with 7.5 sacks.  The Bears’ Khalil Mack has 25 quarterback rushes.  Updates to come.

The Rams beat the Bears, 24-10.

What a thriller today in Chicago!  But it did get ugly.  The Bears' Javon Wims broke off his route and chased down the Saints' C. J. Gardner-Johnson and threw a sucker punch to start a fight.  The Saints beat the Bears, 26-23, in overime.

I feel like this will be a massacre.  The 5-2 Buccaneers are playing the 1-6 Giants on Monday Night Football.  The Buccaneers’ Tom Brady has 15 passing touchdowns in the last five games and the team is averaging 31.7 PPG this season.  Updates to come.

The Buccaneers beat the Giants, 25-23.

Even though both teams are struggling, this is still a great rivalry.  The 2-5 Patriots are playing the 0-8 Jets on Monday Night Football.  The Patriots have won eight straight against the Jets and Cam Newton has no touchdowns and five interceptions in the last three games.  Updates to come.

The Patriots beat the Jets, 30-27.  (What a thriller tonight in East Rutherford!)

I have both of these guys on my fantasy team, so this one play was huge for me.  The Cardinals' DeAndre Hopkins snagged a 43-yard Hail Mary touchdown from Kyler Murray between three Bills defenders with two seconds left for a 34-32 win.

Honestly, I dislike both teams, so I hope this ends in a tie.  The 3-5 Vikings are playing the 5-4 Bears on “Monday Night Football”.  The Vikings’ Kirk Cousins is 0-9 on “Monday Night Football” and Dalvin Cook has a touchdown in seven straight games.  Updates to come.

The Vikings beat the Bears, 19-13.

This game should be fun.  The 6-3 Rams are playing the 7-3 Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football”.  The Buccaneers’ Tom Brady has 18 wins on “Monday Night Football”, which is the third-most.  The St. Louis Rams/Los Angeles Rams are 1-5 against Brady as a starter.  Updates to come.

The Rams beat the Buccaneers, 27-24.

The Seahawks beat the Eagles, 23-17.

I've been lurking for a few weeks.  I had to comment because I was so amused at the notion that this coaching change would be any more of a turn around for the Lions than the last one...or the one before that...or the one before that...or the one before that...or the one before that...or the one before that...or the one...

Well, they did seem to start turning their fortunes around with Jim Caldwell, but I think Bob Quinn acted way too soon and compounding that mistake with bringing in Matt Patricia was the dagger.  I think it's a positive sign that new owner Sheila Ford Hamp is taking a more aggressive stance with the team than her mother, Martha Firestone Ford, or her father, the late William Clay Ford Sr..

How could you not love this rivalry?  The 7-5 Ravens are playing the 9-3 Browns on “Monday Night Football”.  This the second matchup between two Heisman quarterbacks on “Monday Night Football”.  The Browns are seeking their first 10-win seasons since 2007.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Did we watch the game of the year?  The Ravens won a "Monday Night Football" thriller as they and the Browns combined for 35 points in a back-and-forth fourth quarter as the Ravens scored last for a wild finish to beat the Browns, 47-42.  The Ravens' Lamar Jackson returned to throw a go-ahead touchdown, the Browns tied it 47 seconds later, but the Ravens kicked a field goal in the final seconds to win.

If the last 3 years haven't proven why you shouldn't pick the Saints to make the SB, I hope this past weekend finally proves it.

This will be the 4th consecutive year they've done this - peak in November and then crash and burn.

Despite a close game, KC was really toying with us and it should've been a blow out.

I wouldn't be shocked if they lose to Minnesota and just barely win the division at 11-5 then another first round playoff exit.

UPDATE:  This is getting really good.  The Titans have a chance to rally with the ball back and down, 20-13, against the Ravens with 4:13 left in the fourth quarter.

That was a bad loss and it's going to leave a stain on Brees' legacy. I wish he had retired last year.

This loss don't hurt as bad as the previous ones. They got their ass kicked thoroughly. It didn't come down to OT or a hail mary pass.

Going to be a crappy NFCCG next week as the Packers blow out this Bucs team.

Cade was wrong on two counts:  That was a great game and Green Bay is (thankfully) done.  The Buccaneers advanced to the Super Bowl on Feb. 7 in Tampa, Fla., by beating the Packers, 31-26.  The Buccaneers are going to be the first team to play in the Super Bowl at home and Tom Brady will make his 10th Super Bowl appearance.

UPDATE:  This may be the sexiest quarterback match-up I've seen in a while.  The Chiefs repeated as AFC champions by beating the Bills, 38-24.  The Chiefs will face the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV and Patrick Mahomes had 325 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Aaron Rodgers is now 1-4 in the NFCCG.

Twice now Green Bay has blew it in a game with 3 or more INTs from the opposing QB.

Hahahaha you got me there. Happy to be proven wrong.

It looked like it was going to be a blow out for Tampa early in the 3rd quarter. IMO it turned out to be a pretty good game. I thought the Packers would squeak it out after all the interceptions.

I'm baffled by Matt LeFluer choosing not to go for it on 4th and goal. Rodgers could've probably got a TD on the 3rd down play had he run it in, but still, the coach should've knew better. With barely over 2 minutes to go, they weren't getting the ball back after that field goal.

The last spot has been filled.  According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans are hiring Ravens assistant head coach, wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator David Culley to be the team’s next head coach.

Looks like the coaching change will be for naught.  According to Adam Schefter, quarterback Deshaun Watson officially requested a trade from the Texans.  Watson made an initial request weeks ago.

I was dreading this when it was announced last week, but now that the details have come out, I actually like this deal.  According to Adam Schefter, the Lions are trading quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Rams for quarterback Jared Goff, two future first-round picks and a third-round pick.

Wow, don't know what to think of that trade. A bit of a shock.

Lions traded for the same type of QB just younger but picking up those first round picks is great.

Rams now go 5+ years without a first round pick yet they seem to constantly nail every other draft pick and remain in good shape.

Was shocked by this news, it's a really great deal for the Lions.

On one hand; they won't be paying the majority of Goff's contract. The Rams still have to do that. On the other hand, the draft picks make this a steal of a deal for the Lions to rebuild.

Completely disagree. They are not the same at all.

Goff is pretty much this generation's Drew Bledsoe. Back in the day, Bledsoe looked like a Hall of Fame QB in some games and then would look terrible in others. There was no in between with him; either very good or very bad. He was never consistent, as you had no idea what version of him was going to show up on Sunday. In 1999, Bledsoe was a top 3 ranked QB in 10 games of the season. The other 6 games, he was in the bottom 3 in advanced stats.

Goff is the same way. Some games he'll look like a HOF QB but when he has a bad game, it's down right awful. We're now going to witness how good he really is without McVay.

But none of this matters IMO cause even if Goff don't work out, Detroit is in great shape to draft another QB.

I'm so happy to see this legendary Wolverine will get his day in Canton, even though I'm not not surprised at all.  Former Oakland Raiders and Packers defensive back Charles Woodson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year on the ballot.

UPDATE:  Now we're getting two icons from the state of Michigan inducted.  Former Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the third player to be enshrined at age 35 or younger.

UPDATE 2:  They've already paid tribute to two NFC North icons at the NFL Honors and now they're honoring a third.  Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named NFL MVP, becoming the sixth player to win the award three times.

UPDATE 3:  Was there ever any doubt about this one?  Peyton Manning, a five-time NFL MVP and the only starting quarterback to win the Super Bowl with two teams, was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It's amazing how he does it and then comes back for more.  The Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV by beating the Chiefs, 31-9, to win their second Super Bowl.  The Buccaneers' Tom Brady's seven Super Bowl wins are more than any single franchise.

UPDATE:  My post from yesterday has already aged horribly.  Brady claimed his fifth Super Bowl MVP after joining Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to start Super Bowl wins for two different franchises.

Sigh. I was so happy to see Brady finally get out of the AFC East, only to go somewhere else and win another SB.

They looked so beatable vs the Saints and Packers, but then looked unstoppable vs the Chiefs.
