Title: 2020-21 college football news and notes
Post by: InThe313 on September 03, 2020, 12:43:27 AM
Believe it or not, we made it to the start of college football as it kicks off tonight in Birmingham, Ala.  This is going to be a very unusual season with about half the teams sitting out because of the pandemic, but at least we'll be getting action this fall.  Hopefully, I'll be able to carry this thread into the spring, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there.  Anyway, this should be an exciting season, so post your news or notes regarding college football here.  As always, please be respectful of others.  Your obligatory Opening Day schedule:

Central Arkansas Bears at UAB Blazers tonight at 8 p.m.
South Alabama Jaguars at Southern Miss Golden Eagles tonight at 9 p.m.

Postponed from today:

Rice Owls at Houston Cougars
Jacksonville State Gamecocks at FIU Panthers

We'll have football on the West Coast and in the Rockies this year after all.  According to Heather Dinich, the Pac-12 is going to play a seven-game slate beginning in November.

What the hell?  No. 3 Oklahoma lost at home to Kansas State, 38-35.  The Wildcats score 24 unanswered points to end the game.

Somebody please go check on Cade.  No. 6 LSU was upset by Mississippi State, 44-34, becoming the first defending national champion to lose a season opener at home since 1978.

I hate this pandemic.  According to The Advocate, Saturday's LSU vs. Florida game was postponed after a COVID-19 surge in the Gators' football program.

Let's hope he gets better.  According to Tom Rinaldi, Alabama football head coach Nick Saban tested positive for COVID-19.  Saban left the team facility immediately after being told.

That was a quick recovery.  No. 2 Alabama head coach Nick Saban was cleated to coach tonight’s game against No. 3 Georgia following a third negative COVID-19 test.  Updates to come.

What a thriller today in Bloomington!  It was an unreal ending in an upset as Indiana's Michael Penix Jr. made an unbelievable stretch on a two-point conversion in overtime to sink No. 8 Penn State, 36-35.

I hate reporting this.  Clemson said quarterback Trevor Lawrence tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Saturday’s game against Boston College in Clemson, S.C.

Oh, this will be exciting.  No. 1 Clemson is looking to stay perfect and closed the gap in the third quarter, but still trails Boston College, 28-26.  Updates to come.

Clemson beat Boston College, 34-28.

UPDATE:  Well, this is too bad and this stinks.  Clemson's Trevor Lawrence will miss the Nov. 7 game against No. 4 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., due to COVID-19.

Notre Dame beat Georgia Tech, 31-13.

There's going to be a lot of suspensions from this.  Missouri and No. 10 Florida brawled at the half after the Gators' Kyle Trask suffered a hard hit on the final play of the first half, inciting a fight between the teams.  Updates to come.

Florida beat Missouri, 41-17.

This game lived up to the hype.  No. 4 Notre Dame upset Trevor Lawrence-less No. 1 Clemson, 47-40, in double-overtime.  The Fighting Irish's Kyren Williams had the go-ahead touchdown in double-overtime.  The Tigers' 36-game regular season win streak was snapped.

It feels like there is no end in sight.  The Alabama vs. LSU and Texas A&M vs. Tennessee college football games on Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. and Knoxville, Tenn., respectively, were postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing.

It feels surreal that we had "College GameDay" at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. for the Masters Tournament, but it was interesting to see with the connections to golf.  We saw Stanford head coach David Shaw discuss Tiger Woods' relationship with the Cardinal and the ties between Alabama head coach Nick Saban and Justin Thomas.  Interesting episode to see.  Updates to come.

Stanford lost to Colorado, 35-32.

It is hard for me to believe we are already this late into the season.  The first College Football Playoff rankings of 2020 were unveiled.  Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State topped the list.  Texas A&M is fifth and Florida is sixth.

In a season defined by unpredictability, this part is becoming very predictable.  The third College Football Playoff rankings of 2020 were announced and Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State are still at the top.  Texas A&M is fifth and Florida is sixth.

Try to follow this wild finish in the Mid-American because it is crazy.  Western Michigan lateralled multiple times and Ball State rushed the field early, the Broncos scored but it was called back and the Cardinals won, 30-27.  The Cardinals advanced to the Mid-American championship game against Buffalo on Friday in Detroit.

They're moving in a new direction.  Auburn fired head coach Gus Malzahn after eight years at the helm, a 68-35 record and a 39-27 record in the SEC.  Tigers defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will serve as interim head coach.

Money talks and that includes the fans' money.  One of the 2021 College Football Playoff semifinals was moved from Pasadena, Calif., to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Jan. 1, 2021.  It is unclear if the game will still be called the Rose Bowl.

This will be a great way to start the New Year’s Six games.  No. 7 Florida is playing No. 6 Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl Classic.  The Sooners are the Big 12 champs.  The Gators’ Kyle Trask is tops in the FBS in passing yards and touchdowns.  Updates to come.

It's time!  No. 4 Notre Dame is playing No. 1 Alabama in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Rose Bowl.  The Crimson Tide have an 84 percent Football Power Index chance to win.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This does put a smile on my face.  Alabama rolled against Notre Dame, 31-14, in the Rose Bowl.  The Crimson Tide advanced to their fifth College Football Playoff title game appearance on Jan. 11 in Miami Gardens, Fla.  The Fighting Irish are 0-7 in BCS and New Year’s Six games.

UPDATE 2:  This game is anybody’s to take.  No. 3 Ohio State is playing No. 2 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl.  The Football Power Index shows the game as a 50-50 toss-up.

UPDATE 3:  This does not spark joy.  Justin Fields threw for six touchdowns as Ohio State upset Clemson, 49-28, in the Sugar Bowl to set up a meeting with Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

We already have the flop of the year.  A Kentucky football jokingly resuscitated Brandon Echols after he was shoved to the ground by a No. 22 NC State player.  Updates to come.

Kentucky upset NC State, 23-21.

I love this night.  The Heisman Trophy ceremony is on right now.  Will the winner be Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Crimson Tide wide receiver DeVonta Smith or Florida quarterback Kyle Trask?  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Catch this!  Smith became the third wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy and the first since Desmond Howard in 1991.

It all comes down to this.  No. 3 Ohio State is playing No. 1 Alabama in the College Foot Playoff National Championship.  Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban is seeking his record seventh title.  The Buckeyes are 10-5 as an underdog in the last decade.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  I am beyond happy with how this game went.  Alabama captured the title in a rout over Ohio State, 52-24.  The Crimson Tide's Mac Jones had 464 passing yards and five touchdowns and Najee Harris had 158 total yards and three total touchdowns.

One of the great modern college coaches is going to the pros.  The Jacksonville Jaguars hired former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer to the same position.
