A general thread for video games of all eras. No spoilers for modern games. Retro ones, use your discretion.
-
Spider-Man DLC drops tomorrow.
-
Castlevania: Requie, comes out tomorrow. It's a good thing.
-
I think I might skip out on Red Dead Redemption 2. That file size is ridiculous.
-
RDR 2 so far is getting great reviews. Makes me want to go back and replay the first game.

I feel like if I ever got it I'd have to get a PS4 all just for that game because I don't want to to delete anything off mine.

Been on a Star Wars gaming kick lately.
The old Battlefront II still plays well 13 years later. I love doing galactic conquest as the Empire and destroying the rebels.
Now playing The Force Unleashed again, the PS2/PSP version which had a different storyline and alternate levels. Rahm Kota was a cool character in this game.
-
Ocarina of Time is twenty years old today; Half-Life was twenty years old last Monday; Metal Gear Solid was twenty years old last month; Baldur's Gate will be twenty years old next month.
The sands of time will bury us all.
-
Wow, can't believe Ocarina is now 20 years old. Still remember my first time playing it.
-
Ocarina is still my favorite Zelda game, though now Breath of the Wild is nipping at its heels.
Also just got Finaly Fantasy X/X-2 HD remaster and South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Can't wait to dig in.
-
Ocarina of Time is still my favorite Zelda game! I miss the N64 era :-\. Still wish I had mines. So many wonderful memories and fun games.

The game awards dropped some pretty dope trailers last night. My favorites were Mortal Kombat 11, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Crash Team Racing, and Outer Worlds.

I feel completely underwhelmed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
-
Picked up the Max Payne bundle on Steam yesterday for just $4.30. I had never played these games before on PC, so playing them now is a new experience compared to playing them in the PS2 years ago and I must say WOW!
I think these games were developed and designed with keyboard/mouse in mind more so than a console controller. It makes the PS2 versions look inferior and I wonder how I even finished them years ago.
Max Payne 1 and 2 hold a special place in my heart when it comes to classic games. They were made before cover shooters became the norm and there was a sense of reckless fun that came with them. They are the closest shooter games I think exist in comparison to Doom. Doom is similar with how it's more fun to play recklessly, rushing into rooms and firing off BFG shots. Max Payne was meant to be played the same way; rushing into rooms, activating bullet time and spraying bullets everywhere. This is more fun than ducking behind something or hiding in cover taking pot shots.
Max Payne 1 has better level design all around. Playing this game for the first time in years and on the PC just made me remember how much I loved the levels. They are designed with a realistic style and are a joy to play through. The enemy AI isn't as smart as the second game, but they can do some damage once you get to fighting the mercs and killer suits.
Max Payne 2 has the better enemy AI. The enemies are actually threatening in this game because they're smart. The level design is weak compared to the first game, but better AI makes a world of difference.
It's also amazing to see how well Max Payne 2 looks on the PC today. The first game still looks good too but is a bit dated being 18 years old.
-
I traded in Smash. Was beyond disappointed in it.
-
I hope if there's a third Injustice they go with a whole new storyline. Like one where Batman was the one to go bad instead of Superman. Wouldn't take much to even the playing field, just gold kryptonite.
-
This might be the year I get back into Mortal Kombat. The game looks sick!
-
The RE2 remake is FUCKING AMAZING.
-
The RE2 remake is FUCKING AMAZING.
Yes it is! It tops the original RE2 in my opinion. I played as Leon first and beat his story. Did you hear about the free DLC coming out in February?
-
I am going back to Vice City, cause why the hell not? Can't believe this game is nearly 20 years old.
-

Just means you're getting old ;D
I hope we get another Grand Theft Auto. GTA 5 is one of my favorite games ever!
The game I'm currently playing is Assassin's Creed Odyssey. If you haven't played it, its a very good game, but a long as game. So much to do, but I'm enjoying all the experience and challenges.
-
Playing ME2 again...makes me wish they could do a remake of the trilogy. NOt even a heavy remake. Maybe a graphical update....and a completely new ending for ME3.

Certainly makes me feel old lol.
San Andreas was probably my favorite of the whole series. Shame those PSP/PS2 'Stories' games never got a PC release.
-
Love the music in GTA games. Always found interesting bands I had never heard of from playing them.
-

I would love for a Mass Effect remake! I didn't get into the series until ME3 though and while the ending fell flat, its still in my top favorite games ever. ME4 was okay for what it was. Sadly it got no DLC, didn't sell, and bad reviews. I really would have liked to finish out that storyline against the Kett.
-
I've been playing Apex Legends since a couple days after it dropped and I like it a lot - movement in particular feels really nice and the shooting is solid. Wasn't sure about the squad-play aspect at first but now everyone's gotten used to it I'm impressed with how much teamwork you get even with two random people and no mic.
-
Never got around to playing Max Effect, but always wanted to. It was made by BioWare who did a great job with the Star Wars KOTOR games.

BEst game of the original trilogy is 2. For me, at least.

Should definitely give it a try.

Been playing a little bit of Devil May Cry. Been busy for most of the weekend, but the little I've played, been having fun! This is actually my first Devil May Cry game.

DMC was huge back in the 2000's. One of Capcom's biggest franchises back in the day.

I love Capcom games. The Resident Evil series is my favorite from Capcom. Next would be the Onimusha series.

Been playing a puzzle/strategy game called Islanders, you score points by placing different buildings on charming looking little islands, it's very relaxing.
-
The Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order trailer looked pretty good. I hope we get to see gameplay soon. Probably at E3. I haven't played a Star Wars game in a very long time and the fact that this is a single-player driven game is an instant buy for me.
-
Hopefully EA doesn't fuck it up too bad.
-
When it comes to bosses, what's the biggest difference between being hard but fun and being cheap and broken?
-
When it comes to bosses, what's the biggest difference between being hard but fun and being cheap and broken?
If a boss spams the same move over and over again and doesn't let you get a breather, I would consider that cheap and broken. I never really consider fighting a hard boss battle fun after several tries lol, but its very satisfying once you win.
-
There are systems I want to rebuy, since along the way they got lost to the sands of time in moves and such. Right now, these are the top two, and the games I want for them.

I still regret selling my N64, but I sold it to a hot blonde... I would love to rebuy another N64 and a shit ton of games, but I don't know when I would get around to playing it.
-
I sold mine to a friend....for honestly a great price. He named the price, which was about fifteen higher than I was thinking so I just went with it.
I forgot the other system I want a library for....the system is the Game Boy Advance, preferably SP...which mean the library would include GB, GBC, AND GBA games....and these are what I'd want:
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Wario Land 2
Wario Land 3
Wario Land 4
Super Mario Bros. DX
Super Mario Advance
Super Mario Advance 2

That's a good list of games. Wish I was more into the handheld games from back in the day... Any new Sega mini games been announced yet?
-
The first Final Fantasy 7 Remake trailer dropped yesterday and it was dope. I'm super excited to play it.
-
Loved playing Metroid Fusion.
-
Been a lot of Overwatch lately. Now that the network is working in the apartment, I can steamlink rose of the Tomb raider and finish all the dlc.
Ff12 maybe soon as well
-
I forgot just how good Castlevania: Bloodlines is.
-
I'm still playing Days Gone. It's still not a bad game. Not a big fan of the motorcycle.
-
Picked up Battle Brothers last week, been playing it a lot - pretty brutal low-fantasy strategy game, got that 'original x-com' anxious feeling of being constantly in danger. I like the atmosphere and feel a lot, reminds me of a Joe Abercrombie novel; your mercenary company is basically made up of violent fuck-ups and sketchy weirdos in second-hand armour, scrapping with bandits in some Godforsaken swamp.
-
Anyone play Rage 2 yet?
-
With the Resident Evil 2 remake being fucking amazing and a remake of Link'a Awakening on the horizon, game remakes seem to be an in-thing right now. I'm not just talking graphical upgrades either, like say the great Super Mario All-Stars. I'm talking a remake that upgrades graphics and improves upon gameplay and maybe even story from where it began. Maybe add entiely new levels to the game.
Here are what I consider to be prime candidates for remakes:
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest- Upgrade to 16 bit graphics, fix the translation and improve the day and night cycle.
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 - Graphic upgrade, game play upgrade. Maybe cut Big The Cat and add different character like the Chaotix Crew(or just Mighty the Armadillo).Debug the shit out of it. Maybe have a mode where Tails can leave the Mech. Improve the Knuckles levels a bit.
Sonic 06 - FIX EVERYTHING. Every fucking thing. No more bugs. Make it a great 3D platformer instead of the buggy mess it is.
Knights of the Old Republic - Keep the core but improve everything like Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap did.
Shadows of the Empire - Keep the plot as intact as possible but almost total gameplay overhaul. Again, look to how RE2 did it.
Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series: Look to how Bethseda redid Doom. There's the blueprint

RE2 was incredible and I am expecting Final Fantasy 7 will be too! I would definitely upgrade/remake the original Sonic trilogy. Shadows of the Empire was a fun game I wouldn't mind seeing redone. Golden Eye 64 would be an awesome remake. I'll throw in there the Onimusha series. One of my favorites on the Playstation. They just released a remastered version of the first Onimusha. I am really hoping they remastered the second one, third, or fourth.
-
Pokemon can use 'Dynamax' to enter a giant, enhanced power mode once during battles. Players can team up with others online or local to face 'raid bosses' of a constantly Dynamax'ed Pokemon. Pokemon also freely roam in the world, not just in long grass. And you get a bike that can surf on water, which is fun.

You mean PS3? I didn't own a PS3 or Wii at the same, but I did have a 360 and had no idea Goldeneye was available. That was nearly 9 years old. They could always remastered it.
-
So many fantastic games coming out of E3. My top five that I can't wait to play:
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Gears of War 5
Cyberpunk 2077
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot
-
TurboGrafx Mini. That is all.
-
Half way through Detroit Becomes Human and what a fantastic game. Love the stories and the choices you get to make that will effect them.
I'm still playing Borderlands 2. I'm currently at lvl 20 on Chapter 12 or 13.
-
I really loved Detroit Become Human! I plan on playing it again but make some different choices next time again.
-
Just pre-ordered Metal Wolf Chaos and and Ghostbusters Remastered.
-
Just pre-ordered Metal Wolf Chaos and and Ghostbusters Remastered.
Metal Wolf Chaos sounds like a beast game. I love Ghostbusters, but never played the game.
-
Bad North - Stripped-down strategy game about defending tiny islands from waves of viking invaders, simple without being simplistic. I love the way your little warriors run around the miniature islands, feels very tactile, like playing with physical models which is an aesthetic I like a lot.
Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock - Fleet combat in the First Cylon War, the UI is a bit clunky in places and the campaign could be a bit better developed, but the battles are good - watching your foes crumple under the combined broadsides of four frigates and a Battlestar is very pleasing. Reminds me of playing the Battlefleet Gothic tabletop game back in the day.
Ape Out - Hotline Miami but with a gorilla and procedural jazz drumming, short but satisfying. The last couple levels are a bit of a let-down though, big spaces with little cover plus a lot of enemies with rocket launchers means being one-shotted by people you can barely see over and over.

FF15 is very good! Probably my second favorite FF game in the franchise. It was the first Playstation game I got a platinum trophy on.
I'm still playing Borderlanders 2. I'm pretty close to the end, but its definitely getting harder.

Hot video game take:
The original NES TMNT is not even close to being a bad game.

You got them nostalgia glasses on cause that game has some hot garbage ass levels.
I can still hear the bzzt bzzt bzzt from the timed water level.
I still love it though lol
-
I wouldn't even say it's nostalgia because I think it's the lesser of the three NES games. It's just not really a bad game in the sea of utter shit games for the NES.
-
I really do wonder if the Turbo Grafx mini next year is the end of the mini trend...not a peep out of Nintendo concerning a Gaemboy or N64 mini.
Not like an N64 mini library would be huge, but still...
-
NExt week the Genesis mini will be mine...all mine....

Borderlands 3 is out today. Get home, set to install, go eat dinner, yay.

The only mini system I know of that can have games added to it legitimately(without hacking the console) is the Commodore 64 mini.

So apparently both Sony's Spider-Man game and the new Avengers game take place in Marvel's GamerVerse. I didn't know that was possible with different studios and developers and such but whatever.
With that being said, who would you like to see join Spidey and The Avengers? In what style of game?
Frankly, most of my wants are more of Marvel's street level heroes. And open world like Spider-Man
Daredevil immediately springs to mind.. His powers and how he moves and fights being what separates his game from Spidey's. Similarities I'd love would be different costume selections. Daredevil Yellow, Daredevil Fall From Grace, Shadowland, Agent of SHIELD, Man Without Fear.
Villains would obviously include Kingpin, Bullseye, The Hand and probaly the Owl. Include some Z Listers like The Jester and Stilt-Man.
The Punisher would be next. Make it 100% Marvel's GTA. Very Garth Ennis influenced. High bodycount, over the top violence. Rated M all the way.
Luke Cage I could see being very similar to the recent God of War game in it's combat.
Wolverine I could see being a lot like the Arkham games in combat style and the detective mechanic, using Logan's heightened senses to track down suspects you need to find in order to solve some bigger mystery. I can see Daredevil having a similar mechanic but on a much greater scale to encompass all of his senses. With Logan, it's pretty much confined to scent.
Fantastic Four would be my most cosmic choice. Spanning almost the entirety of the Marvel Universe from Earth to the edges of the galaxy. With, of course, the ultimate villain behind it all being Doctor Doom. I can see Game play being much like Ultimate Alliance/X-Men Legends. All four members of team on screen at the same time, utilizing their powers together to explore and save the universe. Also unlock previous members of the team in addition to the classic line-up. So in addition to Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing and Human Torch you could unlock She-Hulk, Ant-Man, Ms. Thing, Crystal, Medusa, Power Man and even have a mission where the main team is taken out so the New Fantastic Four(Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider and Hulk) have to take over the game to find and save the original team.

Didn't even know the Gameverse existed. I've heard rumors about Sony wanting to start up a Marvel video game universe, so if this new Marvel's Avengers game is connected than that's cool.
You pretty much nailed all the Marvel characters I would be interested in if they got their own games... Maybe a Black Panther video game in the same vein as the Batman Arkham games. I would like another X-Men games just like the 1990's arcade game.

With the downright embarrassing videos of WWE 2K20 that came out, I cancelled my pre-order and replaced i with Luigi's Mansion 3 and the Simon Belmont Amiibo.
-
The people at 2K definitely should have went to WWE and told them to postpone the game until it was fixed. The graphics aren't the only problems with this piss poor game.
-
Picked up The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Switch. Great update
-
I'm having a LOT of fun with Death Stranding. Luigi's Mansion 3 is phenomenal as well.
-
I haven't finished Jedi Fallen Order yet, but it's been fantastic and already one of my favorite games of the year!
-
I hope to get Fallen Order soon.

You won't regret it.
I think people who aren't even Star Wars fans would enjoy this game.
A leaked cover art of Resident Evil 3 surfaced!

I think it looks cool. I know people are complaining about the looks of the characters, but they're updated graphics which is on par with how RE2 looked.
-
I'm hoping for a Code: Veronice remake.
-
Despite the fact it underperformed, I'd love to see sequels to Solo in the form of video games. A space GTA. Han and Chewie take missions from assorted gangsters in the galaxy, avoid Imperial troops, that kind of thing.
Though, since it IS Han, you don't really steal other ships, you got the Falcon. But instead, on planets you can steal speeders, speeder and snow bikes, etc. Store them in some kind of garage, blah blah. The story obviously would lead up to the moment Han gets in with Jabba.
There's so much to be done there, it'd be awesome.

Eternal Champions is underrated. I wish it would have reached the same levels as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Tekken.

Something tells me we might be seeing a Shadow of the Empire revival within the year, or at least an announcement.
-
That would be cool. I never finished Shadows of the Empire. If they make it anything like Jedi Fallen Order, instant brought.
Brought COD Modern Warfare for 34% off the original price. The campaign is the only thing I want to play.
-
Final Fantasy 7 was delayed to April 10th. Bummed about it, but if he get a more polished and finished game than so be it.
Same feeling about the Marvel's Avengers game which was delayed to September 4th.
I beat COD Modern Warfare and I enjoyed the campaign a lot.
The next game I'm playing will be Dragon Ball Z Kakarot which launches on the 16th.
-
I beat the Resident Evil 3 Remake and while I enjoyed the hell out of the game, the $60 price tag was a bit steep for short game. I don't remember the original RE Nemesis being a very long game neither.
-
The whole story behind the RE3 game is that originally, it was never meant to be 3, Code: Veronica was. But do to a deal with Sony, the PS got first crack at all numbered sequels up until that point, so the spin-off game became the numbered sequel.

That's quite interesting. I never played Code Veronica and I'm hoping Capcom gets around to remaking that game next. I think RE8 is the next game up with rumors of it being titled Village.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not really a remake, but you still get the original FF7 vibes and I enjoyed every minute of the game. The only bad thing is waiting for the follow up chapters :( :(
-
Paper Mario: The Origami King is good. The general combat though can be a chore...but when the same system is used on a boss it works so much better. It's weird because it's not changed THAT much between normal and boss, but the boss fights seem way more natural.
-
Some games I've played and currently playing.
The Last of US pt 2: While there was a huge backlash over some of the events and things put into the sequel, I loved the game. I really enjoyed it. It was daring, bold, and took a risk most video game franchises are scared to do to refresh things.
Control: Still kinda early in the game, but it's fun. Guns and Jedi powers.
The Ghost of Tsushima: I'm close to the end and this game has been fantastic so far! Some minor glitches and a little repetitive but not to the point of insanity lol. Great main story and very good side quest that have meaning to certain characters. Love this game.
-
Been playing Marvel's Avengers and so far its been a really dope game. I love the action and the story. I love the different ability upgrades and custom suits.
I haven't beaten the game yet, but I am near the end. I really do hope this game sells well. With Marvel being a vast universe, the possibilities for future games are limitless.

Once I found out what kind of game Avengers was, I passed on it. Looks like for me the top dog of Avengers games is still going to be Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. I know it has all the major teams it could at the time, but that's an Avengers game through and through.
However, games I recently got:
Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom(Switch)
Super Mario 3D All Stars(Switch)
Beat Cop(Switch)
Medieval(PS4)
Yakuza Collection(PS4)

Started and finished Horizon Zero Dawn. Such a fantastic game! I'm ready for Forbidden West next year.
-
Next game I'm getting is Dragonball Z: Kakarot.

What's the general take on Cyberpunk 2077? Reviews seem to be so polarizing over this game.

LOL, it's the modern day Daikatana, just without the whole bitch marketing ad. A lot of people are disappointed after it sat years in development.
-
Cyberpunk is still a no go for me...
I'll consider buying the actual PS5 version if the game looks and plays better than what's out right now.
-
Playing Assassin's Creed Valhalla. I put in around 50 hrs, mostly exploring and raiding camps. I haven't finished the main story yet but it's been interesting.
-
I found this hilarious GTA style 16 bit game. It's made by VBlank Entertainment who were the same folks behind Retro City Rampage.
Shakedown Hawaii is the title and I have put some hours into it the past few weeks between writing.
-
Finished Batman Arkham Asylum yesterday, first time playing any of the Arkham games. I found it to be quite fun and now I understand why these games are so beloved by fans. It's the first time I ever played a superhero game that made me truly feel like I was playing as the superhero.
-
I have finally crossed over and tried Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I was quite disappointed in the Castlevania anniversary collection does not allow players to re-map the controls. The keyboard controls are a pain and for controllers, they for some reason chose Y and B for jump and attack. This is impossible to get used to if you were playing them way back in the day and are so used to B and A.
I don't have a way of playing Symphony of the Night outside of the handheld PSP, and this game was the closest I can get to playing it on PC without fiddling with emulation.
I have to say, I am quite impressed after pouring 14 hours into the game. This might be the best Metroidvania I've ever played, from first impressions alone. It feels like the spirit of old Castlevania, but has it's own uniqueness to it. I surely missed hacking and slashing my way through a labyrinth. These games were always fun for their exploration and Bloodstained certainly uses that as a strength.
