If you can believe it, we are already at the NHL preseason.  A whole new season of possibility on the ice begins with the puck dropping tonight in Toronto.  If you have any news or notes, you know the drill, this is the place to be.  As per usual, please remain respectful to others.

The greatest game on ice officially returns tonight and we have a couple of good ones.  We'll start off the night with a banner ceremony and a new team playing its first game.  Your Opening Night schedule:

Pittsburgh Penguins at Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Seattle Kraken at Vegas Golden Knights tonight at 10:15 p.m.

I was wondering when the trigger would be pulled.  According to The Sports Network, the Sabres are trading Jack Eichel, the highest-paid player in franchise history, to the Golden Knights in a blockbuster deal.  Updates to come.

The Golden Knights beat the Senators, 5-1.
The Sabres lost to the Kraken, 5-2.

Get ready for fun in Sin City.  The Pacific Division's Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl and the Atlantic Division's Auston Matthews are among the stars in Las Vegas for the All-Star Game.  Updates to come.

The Metropolitan Division beat the Pacific Division, 6-4.
The Central Division beat the Atlantic Division, 8-5.

The chase for the Cup is on.  The Stanley Cup playoffs began with the Bruins against the Hurricanes.  At 7:30 p.m., the Lightning will face the Atlantic rival Maple Leafs.  There will be two more games tonight.  Updates to come.

The Hurricanes beat the Bruins, 5-1.
The Maple Leafs beat the Lightning, 5-0.
The Blues beat the Central rival Wild, 4-0.
The Kings beat the Pacific rival Oilers, 4-3.

I hope you canceled your plans so you could watch this game.  The Penguins and Metropolitan rival Rangers are in an epic Game 1 that is going to tripleovertime as the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby has two assists and the Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin has 70 saves.  Updates to come.

Apparently, this year's ping-pong balls speak French.  The Canadiens won the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NHL draft lottery.  The Devils, Coyotes and Kraken rounded out the Top 4.

Who wants bonus playoff hockey?  Regulation isn't enough as the Stars and Flames are heading to overtime tied, 2-2, in a huge Game 7.  Updates to come.

The Flames beat the Stars, 3-2, in overtime to advance to play the Pacific rival Oilers beginning on Wednesday in Calgary, Alberta.  (What a thriller tonight in Calgary!)

Has everybody caught their breath after this game?  The Flames picked up a thrilling 9-6 win over the Oilers in an epic 15-goal Game 1 in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

What a thriller tonight in Edmonton!  Artturi Lehkonen’s deflected overtime goal secured a 6-5 Avalanche win over the Oilers to complete the sweep as the Avalanche advanced to their first Stanley Cup Final since 2001.

Have you guys heard me say this before?  The Lightning knocked off the Rangers, 2-1, in Game 6 to advance to their third straight Stanley Cup Final against the Avalanche beginning on Wednesday in Denver.

The battle for the Cup is on!  The Avalanche are hosting the Lightning, who are seeking a third straight Cup, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Who wants bonus hockey?  Game 1 is heading to overtime as the Lightning and Avalanche ended regulation of their Stanley Cup Final game tied, 3-3.

UPDATE 2:  What a thriller tonight in Denver!  Valeri Nichushkin set up André Burakovsky perfectly for a one-timer to lift the Avalanche to a 4-3 overtime Game 1 win over the Lightning.

Time to see who will leave tonight with momentum.  The Avalanche are looking to build off their series-opening overtime win as they host the Lightning in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Not even Flex Tape could fix that performance.  The Avalanche routed the Lightning, 7-0, to take a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final.  That was the most goals allowed by the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy in any game of his career.

Will a change in venue swing momentum?  The defending two-time champion Lightning are returning home looking to avoid a 3-0 hole against the Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  You can put the broom back in the closet.  The Lightning cruised over the Avalanche, 6-2, in Game 3 to become the third team in Stanley Cup Final history to lose by seven or more goals and win the next game.

As much as it pains me to say it, this was well-earned.  Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP, beating out Oilers center Connor McDavid and Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

It is big game time!  The Lightning are looking to even the Stanley Cup Final at home against the Avalanche in a critical Game 4.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  It is time for sudden death hockey.  The Avalanche and Lightning are tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

UPDATE 2:  What a thriller tonight in Tampa!  Nazem Kadri made a beautiful move to score as the Avalanche won Game 4 on the Stanley Cup Final, 3-2, in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead over the Lightning.

Is this going to be it?  The Avalanche are looking to close out the Lightning in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final and earn the franchise’s first Stanley Cup since 2001.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This series is not over yet.  Ondřej Palát found the five-hole to give the Lightning a 3-2 win over the Avalanche in surviving Game 5 to force Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final on Sunday in Tampa, Fla.

Lord Stanley’s Cup is in the building, but will it stay in the case like it did on Friday?  Will the Avalanche lift the Cup for the first time since 2001, or will the Lightning force Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final?  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Somebody play “All the Small Things” by Blink-182.  The Avalanche defeated the Lightning, 2-1, in Game 6 to earn their third Stanley Cup in franchise history and first since 2001.
