Title: College football 2024
Post by: InThe313 on August 24, 2024, 06:23:04 AM
Oh, man, I have been enjoying the offseason, but now it’s time to get back to work.  The memories of last season will last a lifetime for me, but now it’s time to start a new season.  In fact, the season kicks off today in (wait, is this right) Dublin.  Let’s have fun here, everybody. Here’s the Opening Day schedule.

Florida State Seminoles at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets today at 12 p.m.
Montana State Bobcats at New Mexico Lobos today at 4 p.m.
SMU Mustangs at Nevada Wolf Pack tonight at 8 p.m.
Delaware State Hornets at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors tonight at 11:59 p.m.

Go take a shower!  SMU’s Brandon Crossley was ejected after receiving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for spitting on an opposing player.  Updates to come.

SMU beat Nevada, 29-24

It’s Prime Time again!  Head coach Deion Sanders’ second season in Boulder, Colo., is kicking off as Colorado takes on nine-time FCS champion North Dakota State.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This getting fun!  Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders’ third touchdown pass has the Buffaloes up, 24-21, in North Dakota State entering the fourth quarter.

Colorado beat North Dakota State, 31-25.

The first full Saturday is here!  No. 14 Clemson is playing No. 1 Georgia now.  No. 19 Miami (Fla.) will play Florida at 3:30 p.m.  No. 7 Notre Dame will play No. 20 Texas A&M at 7:30 p.m.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  I hope this tradition never goes away.  Lee Corso and Pat McAfee put on a show in College Station, Texas, as they made their picks for Notre Dame vs. Texas A&M.  McAfee went with the Aggies while Corso chose the Fighting Irish.

Georgia beat Clemson, 34-3.
Miami (Fla.) beat Florida, 41-17.

UPDATE 2:  This will be an exciting finish in the Brazos.  Notre Dame and Texas A&M are tied, 6-6, in the third quarter.

Notre Dame beat Texas A&M, 23-13.

It is Week 1 and we are already putting together the season highlight reel.  A Robert Morris defender made a jaw-dropping, one-handed, spinning 360 interception that left the crowd in awe in a 36-14 loss to Utah State.

The man’s temper is legendary.  Head coach Brian Kelly’s frustration boiled over in a viral rant as he slammed a table after LSU lost another season opener.

Brian Kelly can't do halftime adjustments for anything and LSU are idiots for paying him $100 million dollars. I'm so glad I didn't watch that game.

This makes me feel good.  Northern Illinois’ Kanin Woodill kicked a go-ahead 35-yard field goal left to upset No. 5 Notre Dame, 16-14.  The Huskies were 0-14 against Top 10 opponents.

This feels like a “College Football 25” glitch.  Virginia Tech’s Kyron Drones somehow threw the ball out the back of his own end zone while falling down for a must-see safety.  Updates to come.

Virginia Tech lost to Rutgers, 26-23.

Games like these don’t get played often.  Colorado forced overtime in Boulder, Colo., with a Hail Mary on the final play of regulation and won, 38-31, when Baylor fumbled the potential tying touchdown at the goal line.

It’s another week of change.  The new AP poll is out and Tennessee is up one to No. 5 and into an SEC-heavy Top 5, Michigan is up six to No. 12 and the Oklahoma schools tumbled.  Here are the rankings and who’s next for each team.

This is the game we’ve been waiting for!  College Football Playoff contenders No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Alabama are playing now.  The Bulldogs’ only two losses since 2021 have been to the Crimson Tide.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Man, football is fun!  The Dawgs are biting back as Georgia cut Alabama’s lead to 33-28 with 5:00 left to play after trailing by 23 at the half.

IPDATE 2:  I love when a big game lives up to the hype.  It was an unreal finish in Alabama as Georgia took a late lead on a 67-yard touchdown pass, only for Alabama to take it back for good with a 75-yard score on the very next play for a 41-34 win.

I love a happy ending.  A California student had a moment that was bigger than him as he won $100,000 and an extra $100,000 for Hurricane Helene relief by kicking a field goal on “College GameDay”.  Updates to come.

Security in Nashville needs to be on high alert to protect the field goal posts!  Jalen Milroe’s 58-yard touchdown pass has No. 1 Alabama down, 30-28, to Vanderbilt after three quarters.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Holy guacamole!  Vanderbilt upset Alabama with a 40-35 win to improve to 1-60 all time against AP Top 5 opponents.

Somehow, my posts from Sunday and Monday were deleted as I cleaned my browser history.  Anyway, here’s what got deleted:

Vanderbilt celebrated the win over Alabama by tearing down the goalpost, marching it down Broadway and tossing it into the Cumberland River.

Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava couldn’t get a play off in time as Arkansas pulled off the upset.

The new AP poll has Texas up to No. 1, Alabama down to No. 7 and two teams coming in after being unranked (No. 22 Pittsburgh, No. 25 SMU).

I’m getting a case of deja vu!  No. 7 Alabama has the ball trailing South Carolina, 19-14, entering the fourth quarter.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Holy crud, that was a lot to take!  South Carolina’s flawlessly chaotic onside kick went for naught as a late interception helped Alabama escape, 27-25.

Is it too soon to call this the game of the century?  No. 5 Georgia is in a Top 5 showdown with No. 1 Texas as the teams face off in the regular season for the first time since 1958.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Somebody needs to teach etiquette to the crowd.  Texas spectators threw bottles on the field after a controversial pass interference against Georgia, but the refs overturned the call after further discussion.

This cannot happen from a coach.  Louisiana-Monroe offensive line coach Cameron Blankenship had to be held back while berating one of his players during a sideline meltdown in a 28-23 loss to Marshall.

I normally wouldn’t post about FCS football, but sometimes you have to share about the awesome things they give us.  A Fordham interception had it all with a lateral, a pulled hamstring and a touchdown all in one.

One of my favorite pictures on my phone came from two years ago with the block M flag planted into midfield at Ohio Stadium, so I guess some guys cannot let go of grudges or lose with dignity.  A brawl broke out on the field after Michigan players try to plant the team flag at midfield after a 13-10 upset over No. 2 Ohio State.

If I had a nickel for every fight over a team flag today, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.  A brawl broke out after NC State players tried to plant the team flag at Kenan Memorial Stadium after a 35-30 win over North Carolina.

I guess flag fights are one of those things that come in threes.  Florida State head coach Mike Norvell snubbed a handshake from Florida head coach Billy Napier after the Gators planted a flag at midfield after a 31-11 win, causing a brawl.

Start placing bets on who gets the hardware.  Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty and Miami (Fla.) quarterback Cam Ward were named finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Perhaps the only way to replace a legend is to bring in a bigger legend.  According to Adam Schefter, Pete Thamel and Chris Low, Bill Belichick is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach at North Carolina.

Next season, you’ll see him in Nissan commercials.  Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy, joining Charles Woodson as the only full-time defensive players to win.

Well, I dropped the ball with regard to posting this story, but better late than never, right?  According to The Virginian-Pilot, ex-NFL star Michael Vick is planning to take the head coaching job at Norfolk State.

The road to the title starts tonight!  The College Football Playoff is starting now with No. 10 Indiana vs. No. 7 Notre Dame.  The winner will play Georgia on Jan. 1, 2025 in New Orleans.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  That was nowhere near as exciting as I had hoped for.  Notre Dame dominated Indiana, 27-17, for their 11th straight win.  The Fighting Irish will face Georgia in the quarterfinals.

I love a good highlight reel moment.  Bryce Lance made a must-see one-handed game-winning touchdown catch while somehow getting a foot down to send North Dakota State to the FCS final.

Do I even need to say where my allegiance is for this game?  No. 9 Tennessee is playing No. 8 Ohio State.  The winner will play Oregon on Jan. 1, 2025 in Pasadena, Calif.  There are several ways to watch this game, too.  Updates to come.

Ohio State beat Tennessee, 42-17, to advance to play Big Ten rival Oregon.

Okay, get to opposite ends of the sideline!  No. 13 Miami (Fla.) teammates had to be separated after a sideline confrontation escalated to punches being thrown against No. 18 Iowa State.  Updates to come.

Iowa State upset Miami (Fla.), 42-41.

It seems this rivalry left some collateral damage.  A referee suffered a nasty cut under his eye as East Carolina and NC State players got into it late in the Military Bowl during a 36-31 Pirates win.

And then there were eight.  No. 6 Penn State is playing No. 3 Boise State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.  The Broncos’ Ashton Jeanty is chasing history.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Did James Franklin really just win two big games in a row?  Penn State upset Boise State, 31-14, in the Fiesta Bowl and will face the Notre Dame vs. Georgia winner on Jan. 9, 2025 in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Michigan beat three top-12 teams this season:

No. 11 USC, Michigan had 32 passing yards.
No. 2 Ohio State, Michigan had 62 passing yards.
No. 11 Alabama, Michigan had 75 passing yards.

Hang your hat on that, 313!

I will.  It’s a blue baseball cap with a maize block M.  Seriously, it wasn’t the season I had hoped for, but between sweeping the rivalry trophy games (Minnesota, Michigan State, Northwestern), upsetting USC, shocking Ohio State when they were 20.5-point underdogs and taking down Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl as a 16.5-point underdog, there some great moments for this season.

Anyway, let us enjoy more football.  No. 5 Texas is playing No. 4 Arizona State in the CFP quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl.  We have the top defense against a Top 5 Heisman finalist.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This is getting good, folks!  Arizona State tied Texas, 24-24, with 5:00 left in the fourth quarter in a CFP quarterfinal.

UPDATE 2:  Buy four quarters of football, get overtime free at our New Year’s sale!  Texas and Arizona State are tied, 24-24, going to overtime of the Peach Bowl with a CFP semifinal berth at stake.

UPDATE 3:  Time for the granddaddy of them all!  No. 8 Ohio State is playing No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl.  Texas vs. Arizona State is in the second overtime.

UPDATE 4:  Wow, that was a great game!  Andrew Mukuba came up big with an interception to seal a 39-31 Texas upset win in the second overtime.  The Longhorns will play the winner of the Ohio State vs. Oregon game in the CFP semis on Jan. 10 in Arlington, Texas.

UPDATE 5:  And to think I laughed at the oddsmakers over this game.  Ohio State used a dominant first half and cruised in the Rose Bowl to upset Oregon, 41-21, advancing to play Texas in the CFP semifinals.

I can't believe you didn't post about the game yesterday lol. I was watching it with some friends in a chat.

It's a miracle Bama achieved what they did in Saban's last year. Can you believe that this team actually had more 5 star recruits than the 2023 team? All that talent and they lost 4 games this season.

I don't think Milroe belongs in the NFL as a QB, but some dumbass GM will think they can fix him and waste a 1st round draft pick on him.

Respect to Michigan. They pulled off some impressive upsets this year. They deserve to be ranked.

Thank you.  I didn’t want to go overboard here and be a homer, but that was great.  Even though Michigan’s offense wasn’t what I hoped for this year, all credit to the defense for keeping them in it.  Not sure if they will be ranked in the final AP poll because I don’t think 8-5 will cut it, but with wins over No. 2 Ohio State and No. 11 Alabama to close the season, I hope to be wrong.

Anyway, there is also news and tragically, after the horrors of this morning, it’s the right call to make.  According to Pete Thamel, the Sugar Bowl between No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 2 Georgia was postponed following the attack and there’s no official date set yet for when it will be played.

I think we all still need time to mourn, but this will provide a nice distraction.  No. 7 Notre Dame is playing No. 2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal.  The winner will play Penn State on Jan. 9 in Miami Gardens, Fla.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  I hate every bit of this!  Notre Dame ripped off a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown, the second kick return touchdown in CFP history, to put Georgia in a big hole to start the second half.

UPDATE 2:  The Orange Bowl will be my personal torture.  Notre Dame shined on defense and special teams to capture the Sugar Bowl in an upset, 23-10.  The Fighting Irish will face Penn State in the CFP semis.

Is this purgatory for me?  No. 7 Notre Dame is playing No. 6 Penn State in the Orange Bowl at the College Football Playoff Semifinals.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This game is actually getting good.  Notre Dame and Penn State are tied, 10-10, entering the fourth quarter of the Orange Bowl.

UPDATE 2:  Who needs to stop and catch their breath?  Mitch Jeter kicked a clutch 41-yard field goal with seven seconds left to lift Notre Dame to a 27-24 upset over Penn State to reach the title game on Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

Hopefully, the result of this game will not make me run head first into a brick wall.  No. 8 Ohio State is playing No. 5 Texas in the Cotton Bowl Classic in the College Football Playoff semis.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  I hope you have a hot bowl of popcorn for this finish.  Ohio State and Texas are tied, 14-14, entering the fourth quarter of the Cotton Bowl Classic.

UPDATE 2:  This College Football Playoff National Championship is going to be absolutely brutal for me.  Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer sacked his former teammate, Texas’ Quinn Ewers, returning the fumble 83 yards for a touchdown as the Buckeyes reached the title game against Notre Dame on Jan. 20 in Atlanta in a 28-14 upset.

Pray for me so I do not go crazy tonight.  No. 8 Ohio State is playing No. 7 Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship.  The game is being played in Atlanta.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  I will give the devil his due if this result holds.  Ohio State is in control at the half and leading Notre Dame, 21-7.  The Buckeyes’ Will Howard is 14-for-15 for two touchdowns.  The Fighting Irish are facing their largest deficit of the season.

UPDATE 2:  Strap in because this will be a fun finish!  Notre Dame is not done yet as the Fighting Irish have cut Ohio State’s 21-point lead to eight with 4:10 left in the CFP title game.

UPDATE 3:  Somebody play “Across the Field”, “Buckeye Battle Cry”, “Carmen Ohio” or “Hang On Sloopy” by The McCoys.  Ohio State held off a Notre Dame rally for a 34-23 upset in the CFP championship game for their seventh national title.

UPDATE 4:  it is already time to look to 2025.  Here is the Way-Too-Early Top 25.  Nobody is topping Ohio State.  Notre Dame is outside the Top 3.  Nine SEC teams made the cut.  Here is the list.
