It has been a fun summer but our first look at the hockey season starts today.  The first puck drop is tonight in Dallas, so I am opening up this space for all to post news and notes from the ice.  Of course, all I ask is that you follow the rules and be respectful.

How exciting, hockey is back today!  There’s three games, including a banner ceremony, today.  Enjoy the action.  Here’s the Opening Day schedule:

Chicago Blackhawks at Florida Panthers today at 5 p.m.
Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers tonight at 8 p.m.
Colorado Avalanche at Los Angeles Kings tonight at 10:30 p.m.

It is showtime!  The NHL is back!  The Blackhawks are playing the Panthers right now.  The Penguins are playing the Rangers at 8 p.m.  The Avalanche are playing the Kings at 10:30 p.m.  Updates to come.

The Panthers beat the Blackhawks, 3-2.
The Penguins beat the Rangers, 3-0.
The Avalanche beat the Kings, 4-1.

I miss old-time hockey.  The Capitals’ Nic Dowd ran over the Hurricanes’ Frederik Andersen, sparking multiple brawls.  Updates to come.

Who needs to use the pillows when you have fists?  There was a goalie fight as the Panthers’ Sergei Bobrovsky skated across the ice and dropped the gloves with the Sharks’ Alex Nedeljkovic in a 4-1 Sharks win.

What could be more fun than an outdoor brawl?  Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman and Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy dropped the gloves yesterday during the outdoor Stadium Series matchup.

That is one way to ruin your chance of being the top pick in the draft.  Per court documents, Penn State left wing and top NHL prospect Gavin McKenna was charged with felony aggravated assault and other counts in State College, Pa.

The eyes of the world are watching this game.  Canada is playing the United States, who are looking to win their first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since 1980.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  This is anybody’s game.  Canada and the United States are tied, 1-1, midway through the third period of the men’s hockey gold medal game.

UPDATE 2:  Buy three periods, get the fourth for free.  Canada and the United States are tied, 1-1, heading into overtime in the men’s hockey gold medal game.

UPDATE 3:  What a thriller this morning in Milan!  The United States got a 2–1 overtime win against Canada and their first gold medal in men’s Olympic hockey since 1980.  Devils center Jack Hughes got free in overtime and beat Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington to spark a gold medal celebration for Team USA.

I think this was the best way to go about this.  Devils center Jack Hughes and Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes commended the United States women’s hockey team and addressed the backlash from Donald Trump’s comments, saying, “People are so negative” and “everyone is giving us backlash.”

I cannot say I blame him.  The Senators’ Brady Tkachuk is miffed over an AI-doctored White House video he called “fake” in which he appeared to profanely disparage Canada.  Updates to come.

The Senators lost to the Red Wings, 2-1, in overtime.  (What a thriller tonight in Ottawa!)

The second season is on.  The Stanley Cup playoffs began.  The Senators are playing the Hurricanes right now.  The Wild will play the Central rival Stars today at 5:30 p.m.  The Flyers will play the Metropolitan rival Penguins tonight at 8 p.m.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Can you tell the postseason is here?  Captains Brady Tkachuk of the Senators and Jordan Staal of the Hurricanes immediately dropped the gloves on the opening faceoff.

The Hurricanes beat the Senators, 2-0.
The Wild beat the Stars, 6-1.
The Flyers beat the Penguins, 3-2.

This is one of those situations where you pray everybody is healthy.  The Kings’ head coach was showered with glass after a panel shattered during a celebration of the Avalanche’s penalty save.  Updates to come.

I love when bad blood from a rivalry spills into the postseason.  There was a melee around the net as the Penguins’ Bryan Rust and the Flyers’ Travis Konency got into it, resulting in 11 penalties.  Updates to come.

What a thriller tonight in Montreal!  The Canadiens’ Phillip Danault was bloodied after a melee erupted during a 3-2 overtime win over the Atlantic rival Lightning.

Good-bye and good riddance!  The Golden Knights swept the Avalanche in a 2-1 win and reached the Stanley Cup Final for the third time in nine seasons as a franchise.

Even though he was once Public Enemy No. 1 in Detroit, I feel terrible for his family.  According to the Pam Beach County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office, four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux, who was 60, died by suicide.

Something has to give in the pursuit of the hardest trophy to win.  The Golden Knights are playing the Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Final.  The Hurricanes have one loss this postseason.  The Golden Knights are 2-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  We are primed for an exciting finish.  The Golden Knights and Hurricanes are tied, 3-3, entering the third period of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

UPDATE 2:  We got the excitement I hoped for.  Tomáš Hertl scored a pretty go-ahead goal as the Golden Knights beat the Hurricanes, 5-4, in a thrilling Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.

And here we go!  The Golden Knights are playing the Hurricanes in Game 2 of the Cup Final.  The Hurricanes had a historic loss in the opener.  The Golden Knights are 3-0-0 against the Hurricanes this season.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Can the Hurricanes rally?  Brett Howden’s two goals have the Golden Knights up, 2-0, over the Hurricanes in Game 2.

UPDATE 2:  Who wants extra hockey?  The Golden Knights’ Mark Stone’s late tying goal in the third period forced overtime.

UPDATE 3:  What a thriller tonight in Raleigh!  Seth Jarvis ripped a one-timer for a power-play overtime goal in the Hurricanes’ 4-3 win over the Golden Knights in Game 2 to even the series.

Who is going to pull away with momentum?  It’s a pivotal Game 3 in the Stanley Cup Final as the Hurricanes and Golden Knights shift to Las Vegas all tied up, 1-1.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  What looked like a blowout has gotten razor wire thin.  The Hurricanes scored three times in a 39-second span to cut the Golden Knights’ lead to 4-3 in Game 3.

UPDATE 2:  This game may give hockey fans a coronary.  The Hurricanes scored four unanswered goals in the third period against the Golden Knights to send Game 3 to overtime tied at 4-4.

UPDATE 3:  Maybe the next 20 minutes will decide the game.  The Hurricanes and Golden Knights remain tied in the 23rd double overtime game in Stanley Cup Final history.

UPDATE 4:  What a thriller tonight in Las Vegas!  The Golden Knights’ Shea Theodore’s shot off the end boards ricocheted into the goal off two different Hurricanes to steal Vegas’ Game 3 win, 5-4, in double overtime.

Who will come out of the desert on top?  The Hurricanes are playing the Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final.  The Golden Knights are eyeing a 3-1 series lead.  The Hurricanes allowed three or more goals in three games.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Looks like this will be another wild finish.  The Hurricanes and Golden Knights are tied, 3-3, entering the third period of Game 4.

UPDATE 2:  We are all square once again.  Jordan Staal’s first multigoal game in a Stanley Cup Final powered the Hurricanes to a 5-3 win over the Golden Knights in Game 4.

I am expecting more fireworks tonight.  The Golden Knights are playing the Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Final.  The series is tied, 2-2.  There has been seven or more goals in each game.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Just because you have a multi-goal lead in this series does not mean it will hold.  The Hurricanes lead the Golden Knights, 3-1, entering the third period of a pivotal Game 5.

UPDATE 2:  Only one win to go for the Cup.  Andrei Svechnikov’s fifth career multigoal playoff game lifted the Hurricanes to a 4-2 win over the Golden Knights to take a 3-2 series lead.

This is do or die time.  The Hurricanes are one win away from their first Stanley Cup in 20 years.  Game 6 against the Golden Knights is on now.  Updates to come.

UPDATE:  Somebody play “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by Scorpions or “Raise Up” by Petey Pablo!  The Hurricanes shut out the Golden Knights, 3-0, in Game 6 to capture their second Stanley Cup title.
